Guwahati: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) maintained strong freight operations in August 2026, unloading a total of 1,021 freight rakes across its zone during the month. The railway continued to ensure the uninterrupted movement and distribution of essential and industrial commodities, including food grains, food-grade items, fertilizers, sugar, coal, salt, tank wagons and other goods. These commodities were efficiently handled at various goods sheds, supporting timely supplies and strengthening the reliability of freight services.

The Northeastern states accounted for a significant share of the freight traffic. Assam recorded the highest unloading figure with 560 rakes, comprising both essential and non-essential commodities. The movement played an important role in supporting public distribution systems, industrial activities and consumer requirements across the state. During the month, 69 rakes were unloaded in Tripura, while Nagaland recorded 15 rakes and Manipur 19. Arunachal Pradesh accounted for eight rakes and Mizoram six. Outside the Northeast, West Bengal recorded the unloading of 193 rakes, while Bihar accounted for 151 rakes comprising essential and non-essential commodities. The operations helped strengthen regional supply chains, trade connectivity and economic activities.
NFR said the continuous movement of commodities remains crucial for meeting daily requirements and supporting economic activity across the region. Effective monitoring at various levels has also contributed to reducing turnaround time and improving overall unloading efficiency. The August performance highlights the railways’ continuing role in ensuring dependable freight connectivity and supply of essential commodities across the Northeast and adjoining regions.
