Truck Operators Announce Four-Day Strike in Mizoram’s Kolasib Over Deteriorating NH-306 Conditions

Aizawl: Truck operators and commercial vehicle owners in Mizoram’s Kolasib district have called for a four-day strike from October 23, protesting against the poor condition of National Highway-306 — a crucial transport corridor linking the state to Assam.

The strike, led jointly by the Kolasib unit of the Mizoram Tipper Association (MTA) and the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of drivers and vehicle owners, will block the Sairang–Vairengte and Kolasib–Bairabi sections of NH-306 between 7 am on October 23 and 4 pm on October 26. The alternate Kawnpui–Durtlang route connecting Aizawl and Kolasib will also remain closed during the protest.

MTA Kolasib general secretary Vanlallungtiawia said the highway had become “dangerous for trucks and other vehicles” despite recent repairs in July and August. He accused the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) of carrying out substandard and delayed repair work. “Many vehicles have met with accidents because of the poor condition of the road,” he said, urging the state government and NHIDCL to speed up maintenance before the onset of winter.

“If work continues at this pace, it will not be completed even before the next rainy season,” Vanlallungtiawia warned, adding that NHIDCL had shown “negligence and lack of priority” toward road infrastructure in Mizoram.

Around 30 local commercial vehicle associations have pledged support to the strike, which will exempt emergency service vehicles.

State officials confirmed that road repair work is ongoing. The NH-306 — also known as NH-6 — connects Aizawl with Silchar in Assam and serves as Mizoram’s primary supply route for essential commodities.

According to Saizikpuii, Director of the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department, the repair work has already caused disruptions in the delivery of LPG cylinders and fuel, with trucks often stranded for days. However, authorities have assured that no major shortage has been reported so far.
