GANGTOK: A major landslide along the Naga–Tosa Road in the Naga Forest area of North Sikkim partially blocked the Teesta and Chyakoong rivers during the intervening night of September 5 and 6, prompting the district administration to step up monitoring along the river belt.
According to the District Administrative Centre, Mangan, a substantial portion of the hillside along a new road cutting on the Naga–Tosa Road, opposite the Theng Tunnel and near the confluence of the two rivers, collapsed.
The landslide partially obstructed the flow of both rivers, with the Teesta temporarily blocked following the incident. Its flow had returned to normal, while water accumulated in both rivers. Both continued to flow partially through the affected stretch.
No loss of life or injuries had been reported. The district administration was assessing the extent of any property damage.
The SHO, Chungthang CP/PS, and personnel stationed at Theng CP were continuously monitoring the situation. Authorities were also monitoring water levels at Sankalang OP and Phidang OP, where levels remained normal, although the water was muddy.
Both locations were directed to maintain continuous monitoring and immediately report any significant changes. The Police Control Room was also asked to alert vulnerable areas in the lower belt as a precautionary measure in view of the water accumulation.
The Mangan district administration continued to monitor the landslide site and the Teesta river belt. Further updates were expected after a detailed assessment of the site.
