Gauhati University Students Protest Over Gate Closure, Registrar’s Remarks

Guwahati: Hundreds of students of Gauhati University staged a protest on the university campus on Monday, raising concerns over the closure of the main gate at 5 pm and alleging inappropriate remarks by the registrar during an interaction with student representatives. The protest reportedly began after a group of students approached the registrar’s office to submit a memorandum highlighting the difficulties faced by students due to the early closure of the university gate. According to the protesters, the registrar allegedly asked them to “get out” when they approached his office with the memorandum.

The students said the alleged remarks and the manner in which their concerns were handled prompted them to launch a demonstration outside the registrar’s office. They raised slogans demanding that the university administration address their grievances. The protesting students later moved to the Vice-Chancellor’s office and staged another demonstration, seeking immediate intervention from the university authorities. According to the students, the 5 pm gate closure has created difficulties for those who need to enter or leave the campus after the stipulated time. They said they had approached the administration through a memorandum seeking a solution to the problem.

The protesters demanded that the university review the gate-closing arrangement and take necessary measures to ensure that students do not face difficulties because of restrictions on campus entry and exit. The demonstration continued on the university campus as students pressed for a response from the administration. A formal response from the Gauhati University authorities to the students’ allegations was awaited at the time of reporting.
