Tinsukia: Senior cadre of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I), Anoljoy Asom, surrendered before Tinsukia Police on Monday, marking another setback for the insurgent outfit.  According to information available, Anoljoy had been staying in hiding in the Yajong area of Myanmar for a prolonged period. He eventually returned to Assam and surrendered before Tinsukia Police, thereby returning to the mainstream.

The surrender comes at a time when ULFA-I has continued to face pressure from security agencies, with several of its cadres leaving the organisation in recent years. Anoljoy’s decision to surrender is being viewed as another setback for the banned outfit. However, details regarding Anoljoy’s specific role and responsibilities within ULFA-I, the circumstances that led to his surrender and the rehabilitation measures likely to be extended to him have not yet been disclosed.

Security agencies are expected to gather further information from him regarding his activities and period of stay in Myanmar as part of the process following his surrender. The development comes amid continued efforts by authorities to encourage members of insurgent groups to abandon militancy and return to the mainstream.
