The Railway Protection Force (RPF) has detained 57 people suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals at Kamakhya railway station in Assam after intercepting them aboard the Brahmaputra Mail. The group is suspected to have travelled from Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir.
The detainees’ identities and nationality are yet to be established, with authorities expected to verify their documents and examine the circumstances of their journey.
The latest operation comes amid a series of detentions across Guwahati targeting suspected foreign nationals allegedly staying in the state without valid documents.
On October 8, Dispur Police detained four people suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals for questioning and began verifying their identities and circumstances of entry into the city.
In separate operations conducted over two days, police had earlier apprehended 17 suspected Bangladeshi nationals. Five were intercepted at Paltan Bazar railway station while travelling on the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express.
The subsequent investigation led police to Vintage Home hotel, where the five were allegedly being accommodated. The hotel owner, two managers and a suspected key facilitator were arrested over the alleged sheltering of foreign nationals.
In another operation, police detained 13 suspected Bangladeshi nationals from Shanti Hotel and initiated proceedings for their expulsion under the applicable provisions of the Immigrants Act.
Further details about the 57 detainees at Kamakhya railway station, including the outcome of nationality verification and any subsequent legal action, are awaited.
