YLA intercepts 10 pick-up trucks suspected of smuggling to Myanmar

At least 10 pick-up trucks suspected of being transported illegally to Myanmar for sale were intercepted by Young Lai Association (YLA) volunteers in Lawngtlai town, Mizoram, on October 13, amid concerns over vehicle thefts and cross-border smuggling.

The volunteers stopped the vehicles in the AOC Veng locality and handed them over to the authorities between 2 pm and 3 pm. The circumstances surrounding their movement and the allegations of illegal transportation have yet to be established.

The interception followed a meeting chaired by the Lawngtlai deputy commissioner to address reports of rising vehicle thefts and the suspected movement of vehicles through the district for sale in Myanmar.

Officials at the meeting also discussed allegations that new vehicles were being taken across the international border using forged or fraudulent documents. They called for stricter monitoring and increased vigilance to prevent suspected vehicle smuggling.

The YLA is the largest civil society organisation in the Lai Autonomous District Council area. Lawngtlai shares an international border with Myanmar.
