A 24-hour sit-in opposing the proposed 11,000 MW Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP) began at Miracle Ground in Pasighat, Arunachal Pradesh, at 2 pm on Wednesday, with protesters demanding a halt to project-related studies and the withdrawal of cases against opponents.
Organised by the Organising Committee, Save Siang, Save Indigenous Rights, the demonstration brought together project-affected residents, members of the indigenous Adi community and other concerned citizens.
The protesters demanded an immediate suspension of surveys and Pre-Feasibility Report studies, the unconditional release of detained activists and residents, withdrawal of FIRs against project opponents, and removal of Central Armed Police Forces personnel deployed in the Siang belt. They also sought the release of those booked under the Arunachal Pradesh Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
The East Siang district administration permitted the demonstration under conditions intended to ensure public safety. The order, issued by Officiating Deputy Commissioner Jayanti Pertin, restricted the protest to Miracle Ground and prohibited rallies, processions and marches outside the venue.
Organisers were directed to deploy volunteers to assist traffic personnel, ensure emergency access and provide the contact details of designated coordinators to the Executive Magistrate and Sub-Divisional Police Officer. They must conclude the protest within the approved 24-hour period and clean the venue afterwards.
The East Siang Superintendent of Police deployed additional police and traffic personnel to maintain law and order. The administration warned that violations of the conditions would invite legal action.
