Manipur’s GI-tagged scented rice finds new culinary expression at Delhi conference

IMPHAL, Oct 24: Manipur’s GI-tagged Chak-Hao black scented rice and Chak-Hao Angouba white scented rice attracted attention at the Bharat International Rice Conference (BIRC) 2026 in New Delhi, where a live demonstration of Korean-style kimbap preparation highlighted their potential for use in contemporary cuisine.

The three-day event, organised by the Indian Rice Exporters Federation (IREF), is being held at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, from October 23 to 25. The Manipur Agriculture Department is participating under the leadership of Director of Agriculture Peter Salam, alongside entrepreneurs and Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) from the state.

During the demonstration, a chef used both varieties of scented rice to prepare Korean-style kimbaps. Their naturally sticky texture makes them suitable for such dishes, as well as Japanese sushi rolls, offering alternatives to their traditional culinary uses.

The demonstration drew visitors and showcased how Manipur’s indigenous rice varieties could be incorporated into contemporary Asian cuisine. It also brought attention to opportunities for developing value-added products and diversifying the uses of the state’s agricultural produce.

Known for its distinctive colour and aroma, Chak-Hao is among Manipur’s recognised indigenous agricultural products. Its presentation alongside Chak-Hao Angouba and other rice-based products highlighted the diversity of the state’s rice heritage and its potential for commercial development.

The Agriculture Department’s participation also aims to explore market opportunities in Delhi and other urban centres. Product innovation and stronger market linkages could help farmers, FPOs and local entrepreneurs reach wider consumer markets and create additional income opportunities.

The conference brings together stakeholders across the rice value chain to discuss trade, innovation, value addition and prospects in domestic and international markets.

Manipur’s participation reflects efforts to promote indigenous agricultural products through product diversification and market-oriented entrepreneurship, with a focus on expanding commercial opportunities for farmers and rural producers.
