NC bags 3 seats while BJP bags 1 in Jammu Kashmir RS Polls

Guwahati/ Srinagar/ Jammu Oct 25: The National Conference (NC) managed to secure three Rajya Sabha seats while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) bagged one seat as the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly voted to select four Rajya Sabha seats on Friday.

The candidates to emerge winner from the NC include its senior leader from Kupwara, Mohammad Ramzan, alongside former legislator Sajad Kichloo and party treasurer Shammi Oberoi.

Meanwhile BJP’s Jammu & Kashmir unit chief Sat Sharma became the forth to be elected to the Rajya Sabha.

Support from the Congress, PDP and the Independents in the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly ensured the NC emerged victorious in three out of four Rajya Sabha seats.

Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister, Jammu Kashmir and National conference (NC), Vice- President congratulated all the three winners adding, “Despite our efforts to win the fourth seat, we were let down at the last moment. Days earlier, the NC had offered the fourth seat to the Congress but it declined, saying it was looking for one of the two ‘safe seats’. This ultimately led to all four seats being contested by the NC for the ruling alliance”.

After Party President Mehbooba Mufti, the three PDP members, who are also a part of the opposition in J&K Assembly, said they had voted for the NC candidates in Friday’s election.

The Congress had also sent a letter to NC party president Farooq Abdullah on Thursday, extending its support to the NC candidates.
Tariq Hameed Karra, Congress J&K unit president on Friday stated that, “ The party represents a ‘larger cause’ and it is incumbent upon us to fight divisive forces. Therefore, the party will keep its issues with the NC aside to vote for its candidate on Friday”.
