Footwear Controversy at Zubeen Khetra: Assam Congress Faces Backlash Over Gaurav Gogoi’s Visit

Guwahati: The Assam Congress on Sunday moved to contain rising public anger after its state president and MP Gaurav Gogoi was accused of entering the cremation site of the music icon Zubeen Garg at Sonapur while wearing shoes. The incident has triggered widespread outrage among fans, locals, and cultural groups, who described the act as insensitive and disrespectful to the revered memorial space.

The controversy began on October 24 when Gogoi visited Zubeen Khetra beyond the permitted visiting hours outlined in the government-issued SOP. Videos and photographs circulating on social media appeared to show the Congress leader and members of his entourage seated inside the consecrated area with footwear on, prompting immediate backlash from those present at the site and online observers.

Local residents who witnessed the visit alleged that Gogoi disregarded the emotional value and sanctity associated with the memorial. Several individuals reportedly confronted members of his team, stating that the site has become a place of collective mourning and tribute for thousands of admirers across Assam.

As criticism grew, the Assam Congress issued a clarification on X (formerly Twitter), asserting that Gogoi did remove his footwear at the sacred portion of the site.

“As he approached the sacred site of Zubeen Khetra, Assam PCC President @GauravGogoiAsm, in his characteristic humility and sensitivity, removed his sandals and walked barefoot. The misinformation being spread by some over this gesture is truly unfortunate,” the party stated.

However, the response appeared to intensify the debate. Many users questioned the accuracy of the party’s claim, pointing to viral visuals that showed Gogoi and other leaders wearing shoes while within the memorial area. Critics accused the Congress of attempting to downplay or misrepresent the situation.

Political analysts note that Gogoi’s visit took place at a time when multiple parties are attempting to connect with public emotions surrounding Zubeen Garg’s death, which has deeply impacted Assam. What was initially positioned as a condolence visit has now morphed into a political controversy.

Meanwhile, several social media users have demanded a direct statement from Gogoi himself, suggesting that the issue cannot be settled through party clarification alone. Many have also called on political leaders, regardless of affiliation, to maintain cultural sensitivity while visiting spaces of collective grief and public remembrance.

The incident continues to draw attention as discussions around respect for cultural norms and the handling of Zubeen Garg’s legacy remain prominent across Assam.
