Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has issued a strong warning against individuals and organisations misusing the ‘Asom’ tag to engage in illegal activities and disrupt peace across lower Assam.
Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on October 27, Dr Sarma alleged that certain suspicious groups have been exploiting the name ‘Asom’ for personal gain and unlawful purposes. Citing the example of the Veer Lachit Sena, the Chief Minister accused the outfit of extorting money “from Sadiya to Dhubri” under the guise of social work.
Dr Sarma condemned what he described as the rise of a “donation culture” in the state, asserting that the government would not tolerate any attempts to create unrest or tarnish Assam’s image. “Veer Lachit Sena has been creating a disturbing atmosphere in the name of cultural activities and donation drives. They are also causing environmental damage. If necessary, we may have to consider a ban, just like in the case of ULFA(I),” he stated.
Without naming anyone directly, the Chief Minister hinted that several individuals linked to the group were already under law enforcement scrutiny. “I am not taking any names, but action will follow,” he warned, underscoring his administration’s zero-tolerance approach toward extortion, intimidation, and public disorder.
He further directed police and security agencies to take firm action against anyone found collecting money or threatening individuals in the name of social or cultural organisations. Reaffirming his government’s commitment to peace and accountability, Dr Sarma said Assam would not allow disruptive elements to misuse cultural symbols or the state’s identity for personal or political motives.
