Guwahati: Cricket history is set to be created in the Northeast as Guwahati hosts its first-ever ICC World Cup semi-final at the ACA Barsapara Cricket Stadium today. The much-anticipated clash between England and South Africa in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 marks a defining milestone for Assam and the entire region.
This is the first time Guwahati has been selected as a World Cup semi-final venue, placing it alongside India’s leading cricketing centres. With a seating capacity of nearly 46,000, the Barsapara Stadium is expected to be filled to the brim as two of the world’s top women’s teams battle for a spot in the final.
The event has ignited excitement across the Northeast, hailed as both a source of regional pride and a reflection of Guwahati’s rise as a premier international cricket destination. Favourable weather has further lifted spirits, especially as other cities have faced match interruptions due to rain.
In a special initiative, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) have distributed free tickets to fans who registered their interest, ensuring a lively and spirited atmosphere in the stands.
Adding to the enthusiasm, Assam’s own Uma Chetry, who made history as the first woman from the Northeast to represent India, has inspired thousands of young fans to rally behind women’s cricket like never before.
Following today’s Guwahati semi-final, the second last-four encounter between Australia and India will take place on October 30 at DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai, with the final scheduled for November 2 at the same venue.
As Guwahati embraces one of its most significant sporting moments, today’s match stands as a proud chapter in Assam’s cricket journey — firmly placing the Northeast on the global cricket map and paving the way for more international fixtures in the years ahead.
