Akhil Gogoi Links Zubeen Garg’s Death to His Final Film ‘Roi Roi Binale’, Questions Credibility of CID Probe

Guwahati: Raijor Dal chief and Sibsagar MLA Akhil Gogoi on Friday reignited public debate over the mysterious death of Assam’s cultural icon Zubeen Garg, suggesting that his final film, Roi Roi Binale, may hold deeper significance behind the tragedy. Speaking to the media before attending the film’s screening, Gogoi described the movie as more than just a work of art — calling it an emotional bond between Zubeen and the people of Assam, and a call for justice.

“I urge everyone in Assam to watch this movie,” Gogoi said. “I believe and I hope that after watching it, people will unite in demanding justice for our beloved cultural icon Zubeen Garg. This film will give us strength and a positive energy to raise our voices for truth.”

The MLA, however, cast serious doubt on the credibility of the ongoing investigation into Zubeen’s death. He questioned the government’s assurance that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) would submit its chargesheet within a month, citing what he described as the “lack of tangible progress” by the CID team that travelled to Singapore under Special DGP (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta.

Gogoi alleged that the CID officials returned from Singapore without collecting any credible evidence or official documents from the authorities there, which, he claimed, raised serious concerns about the integrity of the probe. “The chargesheet will be filed by the police, not by the Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma,” Gogoi said. “But it seems the Chief Minister has already planned everything — even the date. This appears to be a pre-decided narrative leading to a ‘fitting chargesheet’. I am certain that the accused will not be convicted under Sections 103 or 105 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNS). This entire investigation feels like a scripted drama.”

Drawing a comparison with the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) cash-for-job scam, Gogoi alleged that just as the accused in that case might regain their jobs following a recent Gauhati High Court order, justice for Zubeen Garg too could remain “out of reach.”

He went on to highlight what he claimed were procedural lapses in the CID’s international investigation, asserting that investigators are legally required under Section 112 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to obtain a “letter of request” from a criminal court before seeking evidence from foreign authorities. Likewise, prior approval from the Union government is mandatory under Section 208 of the BNS before conducting any overseas probe.

“These procedures were not properly followed,” Gogoi alleged. “Once the chargesheet is filed, the accused will likely get bail easily.” He further claimed that the government’s plan is to keep the accused in custody until the next Assam Assembly elections by attaching additional financial irregularity cases against them.

The MLA also revealed that he had personally contacted the Special DGP (CID) to offer his own statement in the case but received no response. “I reached out to the CID chief to share what I know, but they have not given any positive response to meet me so far,” he stated.

As Roi Roi Binale premiered across Assam to emotional crowds, Gogoi’s remarks added fresh fuel to the public’s demand for a fair and transparent investigation. For many fans, the film stands not only as Zubeen Garg’s final artistic expression but also as a poignant reminder of the questions that continue to surround his untimely death.
