Forest officials nab timber thief in swift operation near Indo-Bhutan border

Gossaigaon: In a decisive move against illegal logging, the Sanfan Forest Range has achieved a major breakthrough by apprehending a timber thief during a four-day intensified anti-smuggling drive in the Singinala Block area near the Indo-Bhutan border.

         According to official sources, forest personnel caught one Rindao Basumatary red-handed while attempting to steal sal timber from the protected forest zone of Raimona National Park, specifically from the 10 Long Line area close to the Bhutan frontier.

         Acting on a tip-off, a team led by Biswajit Basumatary of the Sanfan Range launched a joint operation and successfully intercepted the accused before he could flee with the illegally felled logs. The accused has been arrested and sent to jail following due legal formalities.

         Officials stated that the operation underscores their firm stance against forest crimes and assured that stringent action will continue against timber smugglers, particularly in sensitive trans-border regions.

         Raimona National Park, known for its lush sal forests and rich biodiversity, has long been under threat from timber poaching activities. The successful crackdown, officials said, sends a clear warning to offenders who attempt to plunder the park’s ecological wealth.

         Forest authorities further reiterated their commitment to strengthening surveillance, intelligence-based operations, and community cooperation to curb illegal forest activities.

         Local residents and conservation groups have lauded the forest department’s swift response, expressing hope that continued vigilance will help preserve the park’s unique environmental heritage.
