Mizoram Wins National Award for Exemplary Traffic Management at Urban Mobility India Conference

Mizoram has been honoured with a special award for outstanding performance in traffic management at the 18th Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference, held recently in Gurugram, Haryana, according to an official statement.

The award was received by Lalmalsawma Pachuau, Secretary of the Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) Department, from Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal and Minister of State Tokhan Sahu during the conference’s valedictory session.

Organised annually by the Institute of Urban Transport (India) under the aegis of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), the UMI Conference serves as a premier platform to promote sustainable, inclusive, and innovative mobility solutions across Indian cities.

As part of the award selection process, the Town and Country Planning Wing of Mizoram’s UD&PA Department made a detailed presentation on October 16, showcasing the state’s best practices in traffic management. The department submitted both a video and PowerPoint presentation that highlighted Mizoram’s disciplined traffic behaviour, minimal congestion despite narrow roads, and the coordinated efforts of the state’s traffic management committee.

A key highlight was Aizawl’s global recognition as India’s “Silent City”, known for its no-honking culture and deeply ingrained civic discipline. Mizoram’s traffic system is marked by an orderly flow of vehicles — where four-wheelers keep to the left, two-wheelers to the right, and no overtaking or lane-crossing occurs even during heavy traffic.

The Mizoram government dedicated the award to its citizens, acknowledging their cooperation, civic sense, and commitment to maintaining public order on the roads. Officials also extended gratitude to all departments and agencies for their collective efforts in sustaining this model of urban discipline.

Mizoram’s traffic discipline has long drawn national attention, earning praise from leaders including former President Ram Nath Kovind. With this recognition, the state once again stands out as a role model for safe, responsible, and harmonious urban mobility in India.
