Majuli: The Asam Sahitya Sabha celebrated the centenary of the iconic Chandrakanta Handique Bhawan with a grand ‘Suwag Tola’ ceremony on Sunday, marking a historic moment for Assam’s literary and cultural heritage. Presiding over the event, Sabha President Dr. Basanta Kumar Goswami said the organisation aims to reach every section of society and keep Assamese cultural life vibrant. He praised philanthropist Radhakanta Handique, whose generous contribution in memory of his two sons enabled the construction of the Handique Bhawan, calling it a legacy that enriches the cultural identity of Assam.
Majuli Cultural University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nirod Kumar Baruah, attending as chief guest, noted that although the Sabha is often subjected to criticism, its contributions remain unparalleled. Deuri Sahitya Sabha President Dr. Sadanan Deori, attending as special guest, described the Handique Bhawan as an institution in itself, a guiding force for the community.

In his thematic address, Sabha Principal Secretary Debajit Bora highlighted that Handique’s donation not only built a structure but strengthened the integrated Assamese identity. Over the decades, he said, the Bhawan has evolved into a symbol of collective pride and unity.
The commemorative volume Suwag-Sourav was unveiled by Vice-President Padum Rajkhowa, who urged all to join the Sabha and contribute to Assam’s cultural partnership. The meeting was inaugurated by Majuli College Principal Dr. Debojit Saikia, while reception committee chairman and Majuli MLA Bhuban Gam delivered the welcome address.
The day-long programme, held at the Banshigopal Natya Mandir of Sri Sri Garmur Satra, saw participation from several dignitaries, including Superintendent of Police Haren Tokbi and various Sabha officials. Early morning activities included an environmental cleanliness drive, tree plantation, flag hoisting, and a memorial tribute. A major highlight was the spectacular cultural procession featuring thousands of literature lovers and vibrant cultural troupes. The celebrations concluded with cultural performances, including scenes from Sri Sri Krishna Raslila, offering a fitting end to the centenary festivities.
