North Lakhimpur Migrant Worker Missing in Andhra Pradesh

North Lakhimpur: A migrant worker from Assam has been missing for over a month after he disappeared from Renigunta Junction in Andhra Pradesh while travelling to Kerala, officials and family members confirmed.

Ranjit Das (38), a father of three from Gharmora Satra in North Lakhimpur, went missing on October 7. His wife said he had called that evening to say he had mistakenly stepped off the train and was unable to reboard. Unfamiliar with the area, he struggled to find his way, and soon after, his phone went unreachable. Ranjit worked in the fish processing industry in Kerala.

His disappearance comes close on the heels of another tragic incident involving migrant workers from Assam. On November 10, Munin Dutta from Dhemaji was found murdered near Salem Junction in Tamil Nadu while on his way to Kerala on the Vivek Express. His companion, Rajib Chutia, has been missing since. A family member said Munin had called on November 9, claiming that a group of men had assaulted him and broken his leg.

The latest case adds to a worrying pattern of migrant workers from Assam vanishing or being found dead while travelling long distances to Kerala, often on the Dibrugarh-Kanyakumari Vivek Express. Similar incidents have been reported from Kishanganj in Bihar, Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, and multiple locations in Kerala.

In June this year, Dharmendra Gogoi (47) of Lamu Gaon in Lakhimpur was found dead near Coimbatore Junction after reporting imminent danger during his train journey to Aluva.

The recurring nature of these cases and slow investigative progress have raised serious concerns over the safety of Assam’s migrant workforce travelling by train to South India. Citizens and observers are urging stronger intervention and improved railway security to prevent further tragedies.
