Assam Begins Special Revision of Electoral Rolls Ahead of 2026 Assembly Elections

The Assam Election Commission has begun the Special Revision (SR) of electoral rolls from today as part of preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections, ensuring that all eligible voters are correctly listed as of 1 January 2026.

Unlike the Summary Revision, the SR process will involve Booth Level Officers (BLOs) conducting door-to-door visits across the state to verify the accuracy of voter records. BLOs will check whether each voter is alive and residing at the registered address. If a voter has died, their name will be removed using Form 7. For residents of Assam who are enrolled in another state, Form 8 will be used to transfer and include their names in the correct constituency.

Individuals who have been evicted or relocated must also apply through Form 8 to ensure their names are added to the voter roll at their new address, after which their names will be removed from the electoral roll of their previous residence. BLOs will make up to three visits to households if voters are not found, with all collected information consolidated for accuracy.

To manage crowding at polling stations, the Commission has set a cap of 1,200 voters per booth. This is likely to result in around 1,826 new polling stations being created across the state, with discussions underway at the district level.

Even after three BLO visits, eligible voters can still add their names to the list until February, as the election schedule may be announced thereafter. Citizens have been encouraged to take advantage of the revision period to update their voter details.

Any grievances related to the draft electoral roll may be submitted to the District Election Officer within 15 days of its publication. If unresolved, complaints may be escalated to the Chief Electoral Officer.

A total of 61,553 BLOs have been appointed across Assam to facilitate the extensive verification and updating process.
