Unnatural death of eleven Common Raven at Tezpur

Tezpur: Eleven Common Raven, a species that has been witnessing a gradual decline in recent years, were found dead on the banks of Borpukhuri here on Friday morning, triggering widespread concern among nature conservation groups.

Borpukhuri, located along the main entry route to Tezpur town, has been undergoing beautification and park development under the district administration to enhance its appeal to visitors. However, the sight of multiple dead birds along the waterbody has cast a shadow over ongoing conservation efforts.

Members of local nature organisations, who first noticed the dead Common Ravens, expressed suspicion that the birds may have died after consuming toxic substances allegedly dumped near the pond by unidentified persons. “If the deaths were due to disease, it is unlikely that 11 birds would die at the same location simultaneously,” conservationists said.

“This incident once again highlights the necessity of greater awareness and proactive measures to protect our ecological surroundings,” said Saurabh Borkotoky, a noted nature and wildlife enthusiast urging urgent need for stricter environmental vigilance. He also stated that the pattern strongly suggests poisoning.
