Work on Long-Pending Jorhat–Majuli Bridge to Resume in December

Majuli: Construction of the long-awaited Jorhat–Majuli bridge is set to resume in December, Majuli MLA Bhuban Gam announced, bringing fresh hope for permanent road connectivity to the river island. The project, inaugurated by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on November 29, 2021, had stalled for over a year, raising concerns among residents dependent on ferry services.

The Public Works Department (PWD) confirmed that all clearances and tender processes have now been completed. The principal construction contract has been awarded to SPS Construction India Pvt. Ltd. (SP Singla Company), and work is scheduled to begin immediately.

“All approvals and tenders are complete, and the company is mobilising machinery and manpower,” MLA Gam told reporters. During a recent site inspection, the PWD Chief Engineer said preliminary groundwork is already finished, and bridge and road construction will progress simultaneously. The project, sanctioned at Rs 659 crore for the bridge and Rs 194 crore for the approach road, is expected to be completed within two years — potentially earlier.

To prevent earlier lapses, subcontracting will not be permitted, and SP Singla will execute the project directly. Camps and equipment are already being set up, officials confirmed.

Once completed, the bridge is expected to vastly improve transportation, boost economic activity and ensure year-round connectivity for the people of Majuli.
