2 BJP members to join BTC executive council: Hagrama Mohilary

Kokrajhar: Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Chief and BPF president Hagrama Mohilary on Tuesday expressed strong confidence that the NDA alliance would form the next government in Assam with an overwhelming mandate in the 2026 Assembly elections.

Speaking at the foundation stone–laying ceremony of the administrative building and hostel of the new Government Nursing College at Beshorgaon in Kokrajhar, Mohilary asserted, “In 2026 elections, the NDA alliance will form government in Assam with 100% votes.” He added that many seats currently held by the Congress in Lower Assam were likely to shift towards the BJP-led alliance.

Mohilary also hinted at upcoming political changes within the BTC, announcing that two BJP members would soon be appointed as Executive Members and one as Deputy Speaker, in addition to plans to nominate six representatives from six tribal communities to the council.

Reiterating the BPF’s long-standing support for granting Scheduled Tribe status to six communities in Assam, he stated that the BTC had already submitted a No Objection Certificate to both the Centre and the State. However, he emphasised that the interests of existing ST groups must remain protected.

Welcoming the state cabinet’s decision to exempt Sixth Schedule autonomous council areas—BTC, Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao—from the proposed polygamy ban under the Assam Polygamy Act, Mohilary remarked that while he refrained from judging the policy on moral grounds, “Since the decision has been taken, we should respect it.”

Highlighting the significance of the new nursing college, Mohilary said the institution would help create a better academic environment after years of abandoned infrastructure. He assured that the BTC would extend full support to strengthen educational facilities, adding, “There should not be any scarcity in education. We will work to solve the issues faced by students and teachers.”
