NFR Accelerates Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal Development in Assam

Guwahati:  Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is making rapid strides in enhancing freight logistics in Assam with six new Gati Shakti cargo terminals currently under construction. The first of these, located at Baihata in Kamrup Rural district and being built by BR Transcon Ltd at an estimated cost of Rs 245 crore, is nearing completion. Physical construction is done, and safety clearances are in progress, with operations expected to commence soon.

The Baihata terminal is set to handle over 25 freight rakes monthly and features three new goods lines, an electronic in-motion weighbridge, two goods platforms, a durable cargo circulating area, high-mast lighting for 24/7 operations, and a special ramp for efficient automobile handling. It is expected to significantly reduce logistics costs for industries across the Northeast while strengthening the region’s freight ecosystem.

Introduced in 2022, the Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal policy aims to promote state-of-the-art logistic hubs with industry participation. Assam already has two terminals—Moinarband near Silchar and Cinnamara near Jorhat. On February 25, 2025, Railways Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw announced six new terminals in the state.

These initiatives are part of NFR’s broader plan to modernize freight infrastructure, enhance multimodal connectivity, and improve logistics efficiency under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, addressing the growing cargo needs of the Northeast region.
