‘Dr. Bhupen Hazarika is the life of the Assamese nation’: Prasanta Phukan

Dibrugarh: “Sudhakant Dr. Bhupen Hazarika is the lifeblood of the Assamese nation. His songs and literature remain etched in memory and continue to shape our identity,” said Cabinet Minister for Energy, Skills, Employment and Industry, Medical Education and Research, Prasanta Phukan, while speaking at a poetry recitation programme titled Mrityu Jinar Gaan in Dibrugarh today.

Phukan stressed that the identity of the Assamese people cannot be complete without Dr. Hazarika, describing him as a visionary who offered a philosophy of life through his works. “His versatile vision and thoughts must be carried forward,” he added, before moving the audience by singing some of the bard’s songs.

The meeting was chaired by Dr. Sashi Kanta Saikia, President of Abriti aru Sanskriti Parisad, Dibrugarh District. Dr. Nirod Barua, Vice-Chancellor of Majuli Cultural University, highlighted that the younger generation must go beyond reciting and singing Hazarika’s works to implement his philosophy in everyday life. “He was not just an artist of Assam but a global humanitarian voice,” Dr. Barua said. The event, held as part of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s centenary celebrations, witnessed the participation of over 3,000 students and cultural enthusiasts. More than twenty educational institutions of the district, including DHSK College, MDKG College, Kanoi Commerce College, Duliajan College, and Namrup College, took part actively. Prominent educationist Jyoti Prasad Kanai and several principals of local colleges also attended and addressed the gathering.
