CM Dr. Sarma presents appointment letters to 5,815 youth

There will be advertisements for 5000 constable posts soon: CM

Guwahati: In a major push to strengthen the Assam Police through fair and transparent recruitment, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday handed over appointment letters to 5,818 newly selected youths for Assam Police and other directorates under the Home Department. The ceremony was held at the Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex.

With this, the total number of transparent, merit-based government appointments made by the current state government has reached 1,41,194. Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said the government has fulfilled its promise of corruption-free recruitment, ensuring that jobs are earned through hard work, not influence or money. He recalled that earlier candidates needed political connections or cash to secure police jobs, a system that disheartened many qualified youths. Today, he said, “performance and merit decide the future of Assam’s youth.”

Dr. Sarma highlighted how past lack of opportunities forced many youths to migrate to other states for low-paying security jobs. After coming to power, the government introduced an annual recruitment system in police, education and health departments to ensure timely filling of vacancies.

He also announced upcoming advertisements for 5,000 new constable posts and reiterated the plan to raise four new commando battalions and one forest battalion. The CM urged recruits—many from low-income families—to uphold integrity, reject corruption and remain compassionate toward the poor. He also appealed to families of the new recruits to voluntarily give up Orunodoi benefits if they continue to receive them.

Highlighting improvements in law and order, Dr. Sarma said Assam Police has been ranked first by the Union Home Ministry in implementing new criminal laws. Crime statistics have sharply improved: registered criminal cases dropped from 1.21 lakh in 2020 to 50,000 in 2024, crime rate fell from 379 (2021) to 128 (2025) per lakh population, and pending cases reduced drastically. Crimes against women declined from 26,352 (2020) to 5,555 (2024). Labour Welfare and Home Minister Rupesh Gowala, several MLAs, Chief Secretary Dr. Ravi Kota, DGP Harmeet Singh and other dignitaries attended the event.
