Assam witnessed a series of tragic road accidents between Thursday night and early Friday morning, with four separate incidents reported from different districts. Three people lost their lives, while several others sustained injuries in the crashes that occurred in Guwahati, Dibrugarh and Cachar.
In Guwahati’s Dimoria area, a major accident took place at Tetelia when a speeding vehicle travelling from Nagaon towards the city skidded out of control and rammed into a road divider. The impact killed the driver and a passenger instantly, while five others were left injured. Residents said thick fog may have significantly reduced visibility, making driving conditions risky. Traffic police rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to a nearby hospital. The deceased were identified as Parbina Begum, 29, Yasmina Khatun, 12, and Ikramul Islam, 26.
Another fatal incident was reported from Moran in Dibrugarh district, near Khowang Chamua village, where a scooter crash claimed the life of Kanak Gogoi. A second rider, Dulu Duwara, was injured and taken to Assam Medical College Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh for treatment. The mishap occurred while preparations were underway for the death anniversary rituals of Gogoi’s brother.
In a separate case in Haticherra on the Silchar–Haflong National Highway, a ten-year-old girl, Ripa Gowala, died after being struck by a motorcycle while crossing the road. The rider fled the spot immediately after the collision. Police later recovered the body and sent it to Silchar Medical College Hospital (SMCH) for post-mortem. An investigation is currently underway.
Guwahati recorded another accident early Friday morning at the Bishnuram Medhi Flyover in Ulubari, where a speeding dumper truck hit the flyover railing while attempting to overtake another vehicle. The crash caused a brief traffic congestion before authorities arrived to clear the route and normalise movement.
Police in the respective districts have initiated investigations into each of the incidents. Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution, especially with winter conditions increasing the risk of poor visibility on the roads.
