Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has accused the Central government of undermining India’s aviation sector by allowing monopolistic and duopolistic market structures to tighten their grip, allegedly at the cost of consumer welfare.
In a social media post on December 5, Gogoi said that an industry once known for healthy competition and opportunities for new entrants is now dominated by a select few operators. He noted that warnings issued earlier by former Reserve Bank of India Deputy Governor Viral Acharya about emerging monopolies went unheeded by the government.
Gogoi asserted that policy decisions under the Modi administration have prioritised corporate interests over those of ordinary travellers. “The government did not care about the average Indian consumer and focused solely on the proprietor,” he wrote, adding that cartel-like market conditions have led to rising financial pressure on poor and middle-class passengers.
He further argued that similar patterns of market concentration are visible across several sectors, calling it a broader failure of regulatory and economic oversight. Gogoi urged the Centre to revisit its approach to industrial policy to promote fair pricing, improve competition and safeguard consumer rights.
