Delhi: Sixteen-year-old American chess prodigy Abhimanyu Mishra etched his name in history on Monday by becoming the youngest-ever player to defeat a reigning World Champion in classical chess. Mishra stunned current World Champion D Gukesh in the fifth round of the ongoing FIDE Grand Swiss tournament.
Mishra, already celebrated as the youngest player to defeat a grandmaster in chess history, added yet another milestone to his remarkable career.

Speaking to FIDE after the victory, Mishra, however, remained modest about his achievement. “Even though I won, it doesn’t feel as pleasing as my previous games in the tournament. It wasn’t a very clean game,” he said.
Reflecting on his form, he added: “The tournament is going better than I could have possibly imagined. If I keep up this form, I have a very real chance of winning the tournament. Yesterday too, I made some errors against Pragg. But I never felt like I was inferior to these players (Gukesh and Pragg). I think I am at par with them.”

Mishra is no stranger to rewriting records. In 2021, he became the world’s youngest Grandmaster at just 12 years, 4 months, and 25 days, surpassing the 19-year-old record held by Sergey Karjakin. He also holds the distinction of being the youngest International Master, along with several other “youngest” titles in U.S. chess history.
With his latest feat, Mishra has firmly established himself as one of the brightest stars in modern chess, proving that his journey of breaking records is far from over.
