At least five people were reported missing after being swept away by the Brahmaputra while swimming at Bhakti Kutir in Guwahati’s Kharghuli area, officials said on Thursday, December 10. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening when a group of eight individuals entered the river for a swim but were caught off guard by the strong currents.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), three members of the group managed to return to the riverbank and were rushed to a nearby hospital for immediate medical attention. Search and rescue teams have since launched an extensive operation to trace the missing persons, with divers and SDRF personnel deployed along the downstream stretch of the river.
Authorities said the water level and flow in this section of the Brahmaputra make rescue efforts challenging, but operations are continuing with additional support from local police and disaster response units. Families of the missing individuals have been informed, and officials are monitoring the situation closely as the search enters its crucial hours.
