Wildfire Sweeps Through Nagaland’s Western Dzukou Valley, Sparks Ecological Alarm

A fast-moving wildfire swept across Nagaland’s Western Dzukou Valley on December 12, prompting serious concern among authorities and environmental groups as flames advanced through the fragile high-altitude ecosystem.

The blaze was first detected by a tourist guide, who immediately alerted officials in Khonoma village. From there, the fire spread towards the southern stretches of Kohima district, its rapid movement intensifying fears of extensive destruction in one of the Northeast’s most treasured natural landscapes.

Dzukou Valley, celebrated for its rare plant species, rolling meadows and popularity among trekkers, is known to be highly prone to wildfires during dry spells. Officials said the valley’s terrain and vegetation type allow flames to travel quickly, making early containment crucial but challenging.

Authorities have raised concerns about potential ecological loss, warning that endemic flora, wildlife habitats and the broader environment could be at risk if the fire continues unchecked. The District Disaster Management Authority is closely monitoring developments, though detailed assessments from the affected areas are still awaited.

Efforts remain focused on preventing the fire from spreading further as teams determine the scale of the damage and plan necessary response measures.
