Peace and Reconciliation Are Top Priorities in Manipur, Says President Droupadi Murmu

President Droupadi Murmu on December 12 emphasised that restoring peace and fostering reconciliation remain the most pressing needs in Manipur, urging all communities to stand together in support of harmony while reiterating the Union government’s commitment to the state’s development and welfare.

Speaking at a reception programme in Senapati district, the President said the Centre was working in close coordination with local leadership, civil society organisations and community groups to ensure that development benefits reach every corner of the state, especially its remote tribal areas. She called on people from both the hills and the valley to remain united, stressing that peace, mutual understanding and reconciliation were essential for Manipur’s long-term stability and progress.

Murmu said she was pleased to visit Senapati, noting its strong tribal heritage and cultural richness. Referring to the observance of Nupi Lal Memorial Day, she described it as a powerful symbol of women’s leadership and their role in driving positive social change. She added that the district’s diversity reflected the presence of numerous tribal communities that contribute to Manipur’s unique identity.

Recalling her visit to Taphou Naga village, the President spoke of the warm reception she received from tribal representatives and her interaction with displaced persons. She also highlighted the Maram tribe, present in Senapati and Kangpokpi districts, describing it as the only Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group in the state and noting that its distinct traditions add to India’s broader tribal diversity.

Emphasising inclusive growth, Murmu said that increasing the participation of Manipur’s tribal communities in the nation’s development journey was a national priority. She pointed out that the hill districts had seen focused investments in recent years in areas such as road and bridge construction, national highways, rural connectivity, healthcare, education, drinking water and electricity supply.

“Manipur’s strength lies in its diversity — its cultures, languages and traditions,” the President said, adding that the hills and the valley had always complemented each other like two inseparable parts of the same land. Reaffirming the Centre’s position, she said the government fully recognised the aspirations of the people of Manipur and remained committed to their peaceful and prosperous future.

During her visit, Murmu inaugurated and laid foundation stones for several development projects, expressing confidence that these initiatives would strengthen education, healthcare, security and community infrastructure. She said the projects would help improve the lives of thousands of families by bringing essential services closer to people living in remote areas.

Concluding her address, the President urged all sections of society to work collectively towards lasting peace and shared prosperity in Manipur.
