Guwahati: After a gap of seven years, acclaimed filmmaker and Padma Bhushan awardee Jahnu Barua is set to return to the big screen with a new Assamese film titled Heruwa Chanda (Lost Rhythm), slated for theatrical release on January 2, 2026. The film marks Barua’s comeback to cinema with a socially conscious narrative, focusing largely on the concerns and challenges faced by today’s younger generation.
The announcement was made on Tuesday in Jorhat, where Barua, accompanied by members of the cast and technical team, visited an educational institution to interact with students and share insights into the film’s theme. Addressing the gathering, Barua said the film was made with a strong sense of social responsibility. “I have returned to filmmaking after many years, and this film is centred on the youth. As a filmmaker, I feel it is my responsibility to contribute something meaningful to society,” he said.
Explaining the core idea of the film, Barua noted that life appears harmonious when its rhythms are in balance, but problems arise when that balance is lost. “Those disruptions and their consequences will be explored through this film. That is the purpose behind Heruwa Chanda,” he added, expressing hope that audiences would connect with its message.

Actor Joy Kashyap, who plays a prominent role, described working with Barua as an enriching experience. Calling it his second collaboration with the filmmaker after Bhoga Khirikee, Kashyap said the film carries a strong social message, true to Barua’s cinematic style. He also expressed optimism about audience acceptance, noting that co-actor Amrita Gogoi features alongside him.
The film boasts a large ensemble cast and an experienced technical crew. The outreach interaction generated keen interest, with students engaging enthusiastically with the filmmakers, reflecting early excitement around the project.
