With New Year celebrations around the corner, the Assam Transport Department has intensified road safety enforcement across Guwahati, aiming to curb accidents during the anticipated surge in traffic. Authorities have made it clear that strict action will be taken against motorists found driving under the influence of alcohol or flouting speed limits during the festive period.
Officials said special arrangements have been put in place to ensure smoother and safer movement on city roads, with enforcement teams deployed at key locations. To bolster monitoring capabilities, the Kamrup district Transport Department has been equipped with modern surveillance tools. On Tuesday, Assam Transport Minister Charan Boro distributed 84 road safety kits to transport enforcement staff and police personnel.
Each kit includes a body-worn camera, a speed detection gun and a dash camera, tools expected to significantly improve real-time surveillance and provide clear evidence against traffic violators. Authorities believe the use of technology will not only strengthen enforcement but also enhance transparency during checks.
Later in the evening, the Transport Minister personally oversaw a special enforcement drive at ABC Point in Guwahati, joining transport officials and police personnel on the ground. Vehicles were stopped for inspection, and breath analysers were used to identify cases of drunk driving. Motorists were simultaneously urged to follow traffic rules and drive responsibly to avoid mishaps.
Emphasising the results of sustained enforcement, the minister said road accidents have dropped by 16 per cent compared to previous years, crediting stricter checks, improved surveillance systems and increased public awareness. The Transport Department has confirmed that similar special drives will continue across different parts of Guwahati in the coming days to ensure public safety during the New Year festivities.
