Entertainment, Dec 29: Singer-songwriter Miley Cyrus has revealed that a proactive and informal approach at major industry events helped her secure the opportunity to write a song for Avatar: Fire and Ash, the latest instalment in James Cameron’s blockbuster franchise. Speaking about her creative process, the 33-year-old said she openly pitched her music to filmmakers at gatherings such as the 2025 Oscars, a strategy that ultimately resulted in her contributing the song Dream As One to the film.
Cyrus said the initial connection was made at the 2024 D23 Expo, where she and Cameron were honoured as Disney Legends. Recalling the interaction, she said she casually told the director to get in touch if he ever needed music, adding that she often puts such offers out without overthinking the outcome. At the time, the third film in the planned five-part Avatar series was already in development, according to People.
She explained that this direct approach has yielded results in the past. Cyrus said she used a similar tactic while speaking to Jamie Lee Curtis, which eventually led to her Golden Globe-nominated song Beautiful That Way for Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl. She described these conversations as organic exchanges that later evolved into concrete creative collaborations.
Cyrus added that she continued the same practice at the 2025 Oscars, telling nearly everyone she met that she was available to write music for films and series. She said she even extended the offer to the creators of Netflix’s Emmy-winning show Baby Reindeer, underscoring her belief in being open and vocal about her creative interests.
Reflecting on her attraction to film music, Cyrus said certain songs become inseparable from the movies they are associated with. She cited I Will Always Love You as an example of a track that instantly brings its cinematic context to mind, describing that kind of lasting connection as a powerful draw.
Alongside her work as a songwriter, Cyrus continues to appear on screen. Her recent acting credits include a cameo in Drive-Away Dolls and playing herself in Dolly Parton’s Mountain Magic Christmas. Avatar: Fire and Ash is currently running in theatres.
