Singapore court to probe Zubeen’s death on Jan 14

Guwahati, Dec 29: A Singapore court will launch a coroner’s inquiry on January 14, 2026, to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of renowned Assamese singer-songwriter Zubeen Garg. Garg, who passed away on September 19, 2025, was set to perform at a cultural festival in Singapore. He reportedly drowned while swimming off the island coast.

The inquiry, part of Singapore’s fact-finding process, will determine how, when, and where Garg died. Police findings will be submitted to the State Coroner ahead of the hearing. No foul play is suspected, according to preliminary investigations.

The coroner’s inquiry, led by a judicial officer, aims to establish the facts of the death, without assigning criminal liability. Garg’s demise had sparked widespread shock in his home state of Assam and beyond, given his influential cultural presence in Northeast India.
