Relocation of Bhattadev University Main Campus Sparks Anxiety in Pathsala

Bajali: Bajali is preparing for a significant transition as Bhattadev University is set to shift its main campus to Medhikuchi in Bhawanipur on December 30, a move that has triggered widespread concern among residents and the local business community. Bajali College, which was elevated to the status of Bhattadev University in 2019, has been central to Pathsala’s identity as an emerging educational centre. Over the years, the university brought students, teachers and steady economic activity to the town, benefiting traders, landlords and service providers alike.

The decision to relocate the main campus has therefore caused anxiety about the future of local growth. Many shopkeepers and property owners said they had invested heavily—often spending lakhs of rupees—to build hostels, rent out rooms and expand businesses in anticipation of long-term demand from students. “Everything we planned was based on the university staying here. With the campus shifting, we don’t know how we will recover our investments,” said a resident, reflecting the worries shared by many others.

The relocation is scheduled for December 30, but residents say there has been little communication on how the economic fallout will be addressed. With uncertainty looming, people in Pathsala are urging the authorities to consider support measures to cushion the impact of losing a key institution that has played a vital role in the town’s recent development.
