Agartala, Dec 30: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) on December 30 submitted a memorandum to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, condemning the killing of 24-year-old Tripura student Anjel Chakma in Dehradun and alleging that the attack was racially motivated.
According to NESO, Chakma was beaten and stabbed on December 9 following racial abuse and succumbed to his injuries on December 26 after remaining hospitalised for over two weeks. His brother, Micheal Chakma, was also reportedly assaulted during the incident.
The organisation said the victims were targeted because of their physical appearance and subjected to racial slurs, calling the incident a reflection of the continued harassment and violence faced by people from the Northeast in different parts of the country.
The memorandum, endorsed by eight student bodies including AASU, KSU, NSF, MZP, TSF, AMSU, GSU and AAPSU, urged the state government to ensure the safety and security of students and residents from the Northeast living in Uttarakhand.
Among its demands, NESO sought capital punishment for the perpetrators, the setting up of a special police station to handle cases of racial discrimination against Northeastern people, and the enactment of a stringent anti-racism law. It appealed to the Chief Minister to take immediate steps to prevent such incidents and ensure justice for the victim.
