Festive rush brings crowds to Assam’s picnic destinations as New Year approaches

Picnic spots across Assam are witnessing a sharp rise in visitors as the festive season builds momentum ahead of the New Year, with families, friends and community groups thronging open spaces for outdoor celebrations. Riverbanks, forest edges and hill tracts have once again become hubs of activity, marked by large gatherings and day-long feasts in scenic surroundings.

The border areas near Kamrup district have emerged as some of the busiest zones, particularly around Boko. Locations along the Assam–Meghalaya boundary, including Hahim, Umshek, Aradonga and Malang Hahuwa, have drawn heavy footfall from different parts of the state. Visitors have been flocking to these sites, attracted by their natural terrain, flowing streams and relatively accessible locations.

With crowds expected to peak around the New Year, organisers at Umshek have announced that the picnic spot will remain closed on January 1, 2026. The decision has been taken in view of New Year-specific arrangements and concerns related to crowd regulation and safety management during the holiday rush.

At the same time, residents of the Boko region have renewed demands for greater recognition of the area’s tourism potential. Locals have urged the Assam Tourism Department to actively promote the region’s landscapes at national and international levels, arguing that better visibility and planned development could help convert seasonal picnicking into year-round tourism.

Community members believe that sustained promotion and infrastructure support would not only manage the growing influx of visitors more effectively but also generate long-term economic opportunities for local residents, positioning Boko and its surrounding areas as established tourism destinations beyond the festive season.
