Imphal, Jan 1: Manipur Police on December 30 arrested an active member of the banned militant organisation PREPAK (Pro) during a security operation in Imphal East district, officials confirmed. The arrest is part of intensified measures being undertaken across the state to curb insurgent activities and prevent extortion.
The arrested individual has been identified as Yumnam Heramani Singh, also known as Malem, aged 41. He is a resident of Itam Nungoi Mayai Leikai and was apprehended from Keibi village under the jurisdiction of Lamlai Police Station. Police said an Aadhaar card was recovered from his possession during the operation.
In a statement shared on social media platform X, Manipur Police said Singh was an active cadre of PREPAK (Pro), classified under the group’s G-5 category. Authorities said the arrest was carried out based on specific inputs as part of ongoing counter-insurgency efforts in the region.
Police officials said security forces have significantly ramped up operations in recent weeks, particularly in vulnerable and fringe areas, with the aim of restoring normalcy, preventing violence and dismantling networks involved in unlawful activities. Investigations are currently underway to determine Singh’s role within the organisation and to trace possible links to other operatives.
The police have appealed to the public to cooperate with security agencies, reiterating that firm action will continue against individuals and groups engaged in activities that threaten public safety and law and order in Manipur.
