SRFTI partners Tripura to strengthen film and media education

AGARTALA, Oct 25: The Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), Kolkata, is collaborating with the Tripura government to strengthen professional education in film, television and audio-visual media through the development of the Tripura Film and Television Institute (TFTI) in Agartala.

As part of the collaboration, SRFTI will prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed permanent TFTI campus, drawing on its academic and technical expertise.

The initiative was discussed at a meeting on Friday attended by Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Joint Secretary Dr K K Nirala, Tripura Information and Cultural Affairs Secretary Kiran Gitte and SRFTI Vice-Chancellor Santosh Ajmera, along with TFTI officials and SRFTI faculty members.

Nirala stressed the need for innovation in film and media education, noting that rapid technological changes and emerging opportunities in the Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics (AVGC) sector required new institutions to adopt innovative approaches rather than simply replicate established curricula.

Gitte said the state government aimed to support the aspirations of Tripura’s youth and help them access opportunities in the global creative economy. He highlighted efforts to nurture local stories with universal appeal and enable young talent to reach wider national and international audiences.

Ajmera said SRFTI was committed to working closely with the Tripura government to establish a world-class institution. He said the institute’s academic experience and technical expertise would support TFTI’s development.

TFTI currently offers two one-year postgraduate certificate programmes in Film and Video Editing and Screen Acting. It has also conducted specialised short-term training programmes, with four batches completing certificate courses.

The collaboration aims to strengthen academic standards, expand practical learning opportunities and build institutional capacity, creating a foundation for professional film and television education and nurturing creative talent in Tripura and the Northeast.
