Guwahati: The Delhi High Court has granted Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan legal protection over her personality rights, ruling that the unauthorized use of her name, image, voice, or other personal attributes for commercial purposes would infringe upon her dignity and reputation.

Justice Tejas Karia, delivering the order, issued an injunction restraining several entities from exploiting the actress’s likeness, identity, or personal characteristics without her prior consent. The court stressed that such unauthorized use could mislead the public into believing she endorsed products or services, thereby diluting her reputation and brand value.
“Any violation of the Plaintiff’s personality rights, which creates confusion about her endorsement or association with a product or service, will dilute her reputation and brand value,” the ruling stated.

The court further noted that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, a former Miss World and one of India’s most recognizable entertainment figures, has long been associated with major global and domestic brands. Her established goodwill, it observed, has instilled trust in the public regarding the products she endorses.
“Her reputation and goodwill have earned her the trust of the public in the brands she endorses,” Justice Karia remarked.
The ruling underscores growing judicial recognition of celebrity personality rights in India, ensuring that public figures retain control over how their identity is commercially used.
