Zubeen Garg’s Family Seeks Special Prosecutor, Fast-Track Court to Ensure Justice

Guwahati, Jan 6: The family of Zubeen Garg has formally appealed to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, urging the state government to strengthen the legal process to ensure swift, fair and effective justice in a case that deeply shook Assam last year. In a detailed representation addressed to the Chief Minister, the family has called for decisive steps at what it described as a critical stage of the judicial process.

The letter, made public by Garg’s wife Garima Saikia Garg on social media, outlines the family’s demand for the immediate appointment of a strong Special Public Prosecutor team comprising senior and experienced criminal lawyers. It also seeks the establishment of a special court to fast-track the trial, warning that delays could seriously compromise the delivery of justice.

Recalling the events of September 19, 2025, the family described the incident as the most devastating moment of their lives, noting that the emotional trauma continues to linger months later. While acknowledging the actions already taken by the state government, the family stressed that the case has now entered a decisive phase where the outcome will hinge on the effectiveness of courtroom proceedings rather than investigation alone.

The family expressed gratitude for the constitution of a Special Investigation Team and the filing of the chargesheet within the stipulated time. They stated that the chargesheet clearly establishes the offence of murder, backed by substantial documentary evidence and witness accounts, and confirmed that court proceedings have already begun.

However, the family cautioned that without a robust prosecutorial framework, the pursuit of justice could falter. Referring to earlier assurances made by the Chief Minister, they recalled his public commitment to ensure justice, including his announcement regarding the formation of a Special Public Prosecutor team and a proposal to the High Court for setting up a dedicated court to expedite the trial.

Highlighting the seriousness of the legal battle ahead, the family noted that the accused have already engaged some of the country’s most experienced criminal defence lawyers. They argued that it is essential for the state to counter this with an equally strong prosecution to ensure a fair and balanced trial.

The letter also drew attention to the scale of the case, pointing out that the investigation lists nearly 394 witnesses. The family warned that in the absence of a special court, the process of recording evidence alone could take several decades, effectively delaying justice and eroding public trust in the justice delivery system.

Reiterating their faith in the rule of law, the family stated that they have fully cooperated with the investigation and will continue to do so. At the same time, they underscored the urgent need for a time-bound, transparent and efficient trial, asserting that both they and the people of Assam want justice for Zubeen Garg without undue delay.
