Guwahati, Jan 9: Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi on January 9 alleged that senior BJP leaders were involved in discussions to remove the names of voters who do not support the ruling party from electoral rolls, describing the claim as a grave threat to constitutional rights and democratic values.
Referring to a media report, Gogoi said newspapers had carried a story alleging that during a BJP Zoom meeting—attended by the party’s state president—there were discussions on deleting the names of voters who do not vote for the BJP.
“Who are they to remove people from the voter list? The right to vote is a constitutional right,” Gogoi said, expressing serious concern over what he termed a direct attempt to undermine democracy.
He also questioned the silence of the Election Commission of India (ECI) on the matter, saying such allegations demand immediate clarification and intervention from the constitutional authority.
“The Central Election Commission is silent on this matter. This is extremely serious,” Gogoi said, adding that the Congress would pursue legal action. “We are registering an FIR on this,” he stated.
The Congress leader warned that any effort to intimidate voters or manipulate electoral rolls would be strongly resisted, asserting that such actions strike at the very foundation of India’s democratic system.
