N. Biren Singh’s Delhi Visit Sparks Fresh Speculation on Government Formation in Manipur

Imphal, Jan 16: Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh left for New Delhi on January 16, triggering renewed political speculation over the possible restoration of a popular government in Manipur as President’s Rule approaches its expiry next month.

Singh’s brief interaction with mediapersons before his departure added to the intrigue surrounding the visit. When asked about the purpose of his trip, he said only that the central government would take action “very soon,” a remark widely interpreted as a signal of impending political developments in the state. President’s Rule in Manipur is due to end in February, and there has been growing anticipation that it may not be extended further.

Political circles have been closely watching developments since a meeting held in New Delhi last month, where central leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party called all party MLAs from Manipur to the capital. The meeting, which reportedly included legislators from across communities, was attended by almost the entire BJP legislative contingent, fuelling expectations that groundwork for forming a new government may already be underway.

Although no formal announcement has been made by the party or the Centre, Singh’s latest visit to New Delhi has intensified discussions on Manipur’s political future. With President’s Rule nearing its deadline, attention is now firmly on the coming weeks, which are expected to be crucial in determining whether an elected government will return to power in the state.
