The East Siang district administration has imposed a prohibitory order banning the littering and dumping of waste along the National Highway stretch between Raneghat and Pongging Viewpoint in Mebo subdivision, in a move aimed at preserving the area’s environment and scenic landscape.
The order was issued by Mebo Sub-Divisional Magistrate Smti. Nancy Yirang on June 18 and took immediate effect. It will remain in force until further notice.
According to the administration, indiscriminate disposal of garbage, plastic waste, bottles, food packets, construction debris and other refuse along the highway has contributed to environmental pollution, public nuisance and the deterioration of the region’s natural beauty.
Officials noted that the Raneghat–Bodak corridor has become a popular destination for long drives, jogging, cycling, picnics and other recreational activities among both residents and tourists. In view of the growing footfall, the administration said strict measures were necessary to maintain cleanliness and ensure environmental sustainability.
Under the order, the dumping or disposal of any waste along the National Highway from Raneghat to Pongging Viewpoint, including roadsides, drains, viewpoints and other public spaces, has been prohibited. Tourists and visitors have been instructed to retain all waste generated during their journey inside their vehicles or dispose of it only at designated waste collection points.
To ensure effective implementation, the Circle Officer of Mebo, the Officer-in-Charge of Mebo Police Station, local authorities of Ayeng and Bodak villages, Panchayat representatives and volunteers of the Eco-Clean Mebo Mission (ECMM) have been directed to carry out regular monitoring, inspections and enforcement drives.
The administration has warned that anyone violating the order will face legal action under applicable laws, including fines, prosecution and other punitive measures.
The order also calls upon members of the Eco-Clean Mebo Mission, volunteers from Ayeng and Bodak villages, Panchayat representatives and Self-Help Group (SHG) members to organise awareness campaigns highlighting responsible waste disposal practices and informing visitors about the legal consequences of violating the directive.
According to the district administration, the initiative is intended to safeguard the environmental integrity, public hygiene and scenic appeal of one of East Siang district’s most frequented highway corridors.
