Prime Minister to Visit West Bengal and Assam on January 17–18

Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit West Bengal and Assam on January 17 and 18, 2026, to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of multiple rail and road infrastructure projects aimed at strengthening connectivity and accelerating regional development.

On January 17, the Prime Minister will visit Malda, where at around 12:45 pm he will flag off India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train between Howrah and Guwahati (Kamakhya) from Malda Town Railway Station. The fully air-conditioned sleeper train is expected to reduce travel time by about 2.5 hours and boost tourism, including religious travel. Later, at around 1:45 pm, he will dedicate to the nation and lay the foundation stone of rail and road projects worth over Rs 3,250 crore in Malda.

The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for key railway projects in North Bengal, dedicate newly electrified rail sections, and virtually flag off several new Amrit Bharat Express and LHB-coach train services to enhance affordable long-distance connectivity.

On January 18, the Prime Minister will flag off two new Amrit Bharat Express trains connecting Assam with northern India. He will also inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of development projects worth around Rs 830 crore at Singur in Hooghly district, further strengthening infrastructure in eastern India.
