Guwahati: Girijananda Chowdhury University (GCU), Guwahati celebrated the birth centenary of cultural icon Dr. Bhupen Hazarika with a day-long programme on Saturday, paying rich tributes to his timeless contributions in art, music, and literature.
The inaugural session at the GCU Auditorium began with a lamp-lighting ceremony and floral tributes to the “Sudhakantha.” Eminent music director Dr. Ramen Choudhury graced the event as Chief Guest, joined by Sri Jasoda Ranjan Das, President of SSA, Prof. Jayanta Deka, Chancellor, and Prof. Kandarpa Das, Vice-Chancellor of GCU.

In his address, Dr. Choudhury recalled Dr. Hazarika’s struggles, his journey in taking Assamese culture to the global stage, and his personal bond with the legend. He underlined Hazarika’s role in shaping the cultural pride of Assam.
A State-Level Inter-College Bhupendra Sangeet Competition brought together 48 contestants from 25 institutions, judged by experts including Prof. Dilip Kumar Kalita and musician Deep Rajbonshi.

The event featured a short documentary on Dr. Hazarika, followed by a dance performance by GCU students set to one of his iconic songs. An All-Assam Essay Writing Competition on “Humanism in Bhupen Hazarika’s Songs” was also held, with Ms. Bhanita Kalita of Handique Girls’ College winning first prize.
Marking the centenary, the university also inaugurated the Sudhakantha Art Gallery, showcasing photographs and artwork under the theme “Manuhe Manuhor Babe.” Blending music, literature, and art, the celebration offered a fitting tribute to Bhupen Hazarika’s enduring legacy.
