Writer Sikha Sarma Detained Over Social Media Posts Targeting Zubeen Garg

Guwahati, Jan 19: The Assam Police Crime Branch on January 19 detained writer Sikha Sarma in connection with allegedly controversial social media remarks directed at late singer and music icon Zubeen Garg, officials said.

The action followed a formal complaint filed earlier in the day by Garima Saikia Garg, the singer’s wife, who accused Sarma of sharing objectionable and defamatory content online. Based on the complaint, the Crime Branch registered Case No. 2/26 under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 152, 196, 299, 351, 352, 353 and 356, relating to offences such as promoting enmity, spreading false statements, defamation and criminal intimidation.

Police sources said Sarma was detained from her apartment in Guwahati’s Patharquarry area and taken in for questioning as part of the investigation. Officials stated that the decision was taken after examining the contents of the FIR and preliminary material linked to the alleged posts.

Members of the All Assam Zubeen Garg Fans’ Forum were present at the Dispur Police Station, expressing support for the complainant and demanding strict action against what they described as repeated offensive remarks against the popular artist.

Sarma had faced sharp criticism in recent days from fans and sections of the public over her alleged social media posts about Zubeen Garg, which sparked widespread outrage across platforms.
