Aizawl, Jan 22: Mizoram Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar on January 21 said that people from Myanmar who have taken shelter in the state are being adequately supported by the administration, even as he clarified that the matter does not fall directly under his ministerial portfolio. Speaking on the sidelines of an event, Hmar said the refugees were safe, healthy and receiving necessary care, adding that the state has ensured their well-being to the best of its ability.
While refraining from further comment on the refugee situation, the minister turned his focus to Mizoram’s economic priorities, highlighting tourism as a key growth driver for the state. He said the government is planning to develop a new tourism hub at Thainzal, located around three hours from Aizawl, as part of efforts to expand and diversify the sector.
According to Hmar, Thainzal holds strong potential due to its natural features, including a waterfall, a golf course and a scenic valley, which could be developed into a major attraction for visitors. He said the aim is to create destinations that encourage longer stays and offer a mix of nature-based and recreational experiences.
Tourism data reflects growing interest in the state, with Mizoram recording a 145.54 per cent increase in tourist arrivals between 2023 and 2024. Early indicators suggest that visitor numbers may rise further this year, a trend officials believe will be reinforced by improved connectivity, including the introduction of rail services.
Hmar said tourism growth is not merely about higher footfall but about reshaping Mizoram’s economic future. He added that better connectivity has created new opportunities, and the state is now moving decisively to capitalise on them.
To support this push, Mizoram Tourism has launched the Mizoram Tourism Events and Festival Calendar 2026, unveiled on December 15, 2025. The calendar brings together festivals, cultural programmes and sporting events scheduled throughout the year, allowing travellers to plan visits in advance and engage more deeply with the state’s cultural and social life.
