Congress Leader Shabana Akhtar Joins AIUDF, Sparks Buzz in Dhubri Politics

Dhubri: In a significant political development, influential Congress leader Shabana Akhtar, who has previously held key positions in the party and even contested the last Assembly elections on a Congress ticket, formally joined the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) today.

Her decision comes at a crucial time when Congress is attempting to consolidate its base ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. The switch of the Bilasipara-based leader to AIUDF has already generated considerable discussion in political circles across Lower Assam.

The joining ceremony took place in Dhubri under the chairmanship of local MLA Nazrul Haque and was attended by three other AIUDF legislators — Hafiz Bashir Qasimi, Nijamur Rahman, and Samsul Huda.

After officially joining the party, Akhtar minced no words in expressing her disappointment with the Congress leadership, particularly Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain. She accused them of neglecting the concerns of minority communities and failing to raise their issues at the national level.

Political observers believe that Akhtar’s defection could bolster AIUDF’s influence in minority-dominated constituencies while dealing a blow to Congress’s prospects in the Dhubri region, where the contest between the two parties is expected to intensify in the run-up to the 2026 Assembly polls.
